If you want to import data to a new data document, choose “Open” from the File menu and select the text file. A new empty data document will be created and the text from your import file will be displayed in the Import dialog. Adjust the settings and click OK.
Appending Data
If you want to append the new data to an existing data file, select the file’s Data layer and then choose “Import” from the Layer menu. Adjust the settings in the Import dialog and click OK.
How to Use the Import Dialog
The Import dialog shows you the first eight lines from the file. This lets you see the structure and any header lines that may be at the beginning.
Quest can usually determine the number of header lines and field separator type for you.
You will need to set the field labels and tab positions yourself. Clicking in the center of the label shows a popup menu listing all of the possible field types. Clicking and dragging on the divider line between labels lets you move the tab positions that separate the fields. Tab and comma-separated files will “snap” to their tab positions so it is not necessary to adjust them although you may do so to enjoy the visual effect. Fixed-width files require you to set the tab positions between the text in the fields. You may remove the right-most column by dragging the right-most tab all the way over to the right. Otherwise data columns that you wish to ignore can be set to “<ignore>”.
The Import dialog recognizes all common date formats automatically. It also recognizes and converts decimal and fractional price formats.
The full version of Wall Street Quest also has scripts for converting daily quote and portfolio files from AOL and eWorld.
